Constitution Day, an American federal observance, honors the adoption of the United States Constitution and new citizens. Typically observed on September 17, it commemorates the signing of the Constitution in 1787 by delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. When the day falls on a weekend or holiday, institutions celebrate it on an adjacent weekday. The current holiday was established in 2004 through an amendment by Senator Robert Byrd, replacing the former “Citizenship Day,” previously celebrated on the third Sunday in May.
